Red star over china is a great book by a journalist who recounts what he sees and hears during the Chinese civil war. Not specifically on mao but he’s a central figure of course.

Read a bibliography. You’ll learn that Mao, when he declared himself a communist, he didn’t understand the movement. Lol
I recommend you to read something more critic and modern, like Zizek or Mark Fisher, not a book that’ll trap you into an eco chamber.
