Every time some movement gains momentum in South America and elsewhere, you immediately get a spate of (I’m assuming) western commentators pointing out either how the movement is not progressive enough (like in terms of LGBT rights) or not socialist enough.
Not saying these cannot be legitimate grievances but I think it’s better to look at these movements primarily from the lens of struggle against imperialism. Here is a guy with popular support of the poor and indigeneous and who is vocally against American imperialism running against the far-right daughter of a far-right dictator. I don’t know what’s so complicated about this situation.
And the only reason Fujimori is running is to avoid prison as she is under investigation for fraud right now.
