Sharing this because I assume most people are unaware of far-right Indian subreddits (not that I think one should know about them) so it would be slightly interesting.

The top comment for this post says (translated):

If IMF has said the reforms are important then activism and politics are irrelevant

BTW this subreddit (/r/chodi) gets pushed to India’s /r/popular everyday. It constantly has islamophobic, casteist, sexist posts most of which are veiled under high caste Hindu dumbasses playing victims (to things like cancel culture and affirmative action for oppressed minorities).

Every time I hear about internet communities for people from India, it seems like very soon afterwards I hear about them almost always leaning far-right. I’d really like to know why this is, if anyone has insight.

I know the current government is pretty far right (I’ve heard Modi be called a fascist by many people inside and outside of India), and I know the social system of India favours the upper class and the social conservative. Is there something I’m missing?

Indian people inhabiting English speaking online spaces generally belong to the middle/upper-middle class (in terms of wealth) so they are by default very reactionary. There is no political education given to children in schools since the schooling for this class is completely privitized and is just a means of churning out wage slaves for the capital. So they are fully steeped in the neoliberal doctrine. The worst among them turn out to be Hindu fascists like this sub and some who can sense that the system is wrong turn out to be idpol liberals because they have no class consciousness and no understanding of society and history on the basis of class struggle. I was like the latter too and turned communist almost by accident.

Another thing is that there is a lot of racism, casteism and sexism just entrenched in the general consciousness of our country. I don’t know if it was like since pre-colonial times or after but it is a problem that has never been addressed so when it comes to social justice issues there many people of oppressed classes and groups that fight very bravely but people don’t care about them much unless some corporation co-opts such movements to boost their PR. This is kinda like how apparently well-meaning white people can many times have subconscious racist biases because it is just a common ontology.

This is just my understanding of it. But yeah, Reddit, Twitter, etc. being English websites is a huge factor why these dumbasses congregate on these websites.

I’ve noticed its not just the country-level subs like /r/china, /r/venezuela, /r/cuba, /r/india, /r/canada, etc that are ran by reactionaries, even the city level subs I’ve seen are that way too. Its kinda strange to say, but any english-speaking online community will tend to be reactionary.
