The zones would permit companies with large areas of land to form governments carrying the same authority as counties, including the ability to impose taxes, form school districts and courts and provide government services.

The Nevada Independent article on Blockchains, LLC, the company mentioned in the article that bought about 67,000 acres of land near Tahoe and Reno.

A quote from the article: “Blockchains, LLC describes itself as a company that “conceptualizes and incubates blockchain-powered ideas, ventures, and businesses.” Its current projects, it adds on the site, include projects for “financial services, trusted identity solutions, and software development.”

Although the current focus is on programming, which does not usually require much space, Johns said that the company could branch out into artificial intelligence, 3D-printing and nanotechnology. The company’s overarching goal, she said, is to “change the world.”

“With all of this land, we have the capacity and space to change the world,” Johns said.”

Anyone else feeling…enthused about a group like that having the power to operate as its own governing body?

Isn’t this already a thing? I have a vague memory of one of the Disney parks being granted municipal status or something similar.

I’m sure in the USA this is normal. It’s how cities and municipalities are born - somebody buys a a plot of land in the desert, found a local government, and sells off chunks to property investors.

So you’ve had cities owned by religious fanatics.

It’s also how universities etc can have their own police forces.
