    It seems like they’re only doing this to promote U.S. innocence and further feed into the U.S. public’s anti‐Chinese sentiment, because diplomatically this would be useless. It isn’t going to push the PRC directly into the conflict, and they know that the PRC isn’t going to officially denounce an ally over a militant response to creeping neoimperialism, so they’ll use the refusal to distract from the NATO’s provocation and reremind everybody about how much China sucks.

    I mean, come on, ‘Americans’ had ‘hopes that President Xi Jinping would step in’? What an obvious lie. It’s obnoxiously condescending to assume that Chinese officials had no idea about the troop buildup, too.
