I think the worst part is the dev is afraid of taking any action against them because they can just release a video smearing him and it’ll be the end of his reputation.

I call this the Sonichu principle: Your intellectual property is sacrosanct and must be defended, their intellectual property is freely available for you to make use of.

Of course, I’m against “intellectual property” as a concept.

as someone who used to do art for games, and write a lot of fiction, i disagree. intellectual property is good in the way that whatever you make, is yours to dictate how it’s applied.

what i mean is, if i write a book, no one should be allowed to copy the text and sell my book as theirs without my explicit permission and credit. if i make a game, no one should be allowed to go and put my art in their own game without my explicit permission and credit.

if you pirate my books, or pirate my games, that’s entirely different. assuming the content is provided to the people without modifications, for free, with the sole purpose of being shared and enjoyed by the community. basically, it is perfectly moral to pirate content. because pirating is entirely different from infringing on someone’s intellectual property.

Piracy is a gray area, stop being offended, you pirate things, whether adblock is or Isn’t piracy it won’t change your life. Just move on and leave things be.

I’m extremely against copyright law in general, but seeing just how big LTT is (they’ve spent tens of thousands for a single video on several occasions) and how hardline anti-piracy and anti-doing anything to reduce the revenue to “creators” (namely them) they are, I felt it appropriate to point out the hypocrisy. This is basically the same as how the “You wouldn’t download a car” video used pirated music.

Ad-blocking is like copyright infringement - in that it is a thing that any sensible person does if they know how to, and a thing which wealthy despots will continue to attempt to prevent using irritating but ultimately ineffective technical and legal mechanisms.

He explained in his podcast that when he said using adblock was piracy he did not mean it was necissarily criminal or immoral.

He means piracy in the sense of:

the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work.

i.e. if there is an implicit (and sometimes explcit) agreement to watch adverts when you consume a lot of internet content.

He is clearly not anti-piracy as he has made videos explaining how to set up a pi-hole (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXTnrD_Zs4&t=864s). He just decided an a particular defintion for the word piracy.

the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work.

How is this related to blocking an ad? It’s the very opposite of reproducing videos, images and sound.

well, I don’t necissarily agree with him but I think he means that: The deal is that you can use the content if you watch adds. If you don’t watch adds you are breaking the deal and therfore the use is unauthorized.

“Doing X is immoral, unless I’m doing it” is something I see way too often, espexiay on the internet.

They’re far from nobodies, they’re comparable to mainstream Western news outlets (you could argue they are a mainstream Western news outlet). They have a gargantuan production budget, and have actual influence over the actual technology industry, like, the OEMs.
