Goro’s List of (Mostly) Recent Works on China
Introduction
Hey, it’s Goro here. I decided to compile a list of all the English translations of Chinese literature that I found on the Internet for Bay Area415. I originally did this for him and gave him everything I had, at least at the time that I gave him the heads-up on these books, but I decided to also compile this list and put everything in one place after someone said that he’d like to see the books that I found. Now, to be clear: not everything here is an English translation and there are some things that I just threw together that had to do with China.
In addition: I haven’t read any of these. And from what I can tell: the views expressed in these tomes are of various views on China. Sometimes there are criticisms in the book descriptions. Sometimes there aren’t. Sometimes there are policy suggestions by Chinese professors and political officials. I guarantee that most of the non-Chinese people that wrote their own books have some sort of bias against China as a whole, or at least, that’s what I think. I included them here nonetheless because it seemed that they had valuable information to share.
So far, I’ve only started reading A New Study on the Judicial Administrative System with Chinese Characteristics but only just started. In addition, I’ve been recommended much of Zhang Yibing’s work, such as Back to Marx. Andre Vitchek’s work is also supposed to be good. Other than that, I got no other suggestions. This is pretty much uncharted territory… and part of the point is to chart that territory, to gather the information that we can from these books, despite the (literal) cost of them. I myself tried to get the 3-volume set An Ideological History of the Communist Party of China, but had to refund it on second thought because, aside from being lost in transit, the cost was just too steep.
Also, I’m hoping to post this on Twitter and other social media. If you’re reading this, please Retweet. I don’t care what happens with these works, whether people convert them into PDFs or not, but I do care that this information gets out there, or at least this list of books that I spent hours trying to find (and let me tell you: it took quite a while). I’m also hoping that figures like Daniel Dumbrill decide to at least Retweet and maybe mention this list in a video or something, but either way, it’s fine. I just hope that people spread this around as it’s meant to be spread around.
For the record, I’m a Marxist-Leninist but I went looking for these books not only with a Marxist perspective in mind, but also with a non-Marxist one as well. That is, I wanted to get all facets of China down as much as possible, such as:
Science
History
Marxism
Literature
Economics
Internal Debates
Criticisms and Praises
Achievements
Etc.
Thus, that would explain the variety of what I found here. However, if you wish to contact me and tell me what to add on to this list, you can find me on Discord through Makan#7791, though I usually go by the name GoroTheHappyWarrior. You can also see me on Twitter through the account with the current name Muhacir, or @Muhacir2020.
Lastly, for those that don’t know, I also work on the ProleWiki project, which you can find here:
https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/ProleWiki:Main_Page
It’s basically a “Wikipedia” like site, but for Marxists. If you’re a Marxist-Leninist and wish to help, please do so by creating an account on ProleWiki and joining our Telegram group. We also need help with translations into French, Portuguese, and Spanish. But really, if you can help out, that would be much appreciated. We also hang out on Lemmygrad, which you can find here:
Really, spread this list to everyone as much as possible, even people that are knowledgeable on this subject, such as Ian Goodrum on Twitter (@isgoodrum) or Daniel Dumbrill (@DanielDumbrill), as they may find this of interest. You can also find Bay Area on Twitter through the handle @bayareas415.
Lastly, again, this is all so we can sift through all this info on China. Some of these have criticisms and some of them have praise. I’d say at least half of them have criticisms and policy suggestions for the CPC, even some of the books published by the CPC themselves. So let’s sift through it all. I myself will buy a couple to help with the ProleWiki project and maybe talk about them online through YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, etc. Anyways, have fun with this list as I worked on it for several hours.
Solidarity, comrades, and good luck to you and yours.
The list is in the reply due to the length limit for Lemmy comments
