• An important member of the anti-imperialist bloc. Unlike some other countries that are only anti-imperialist in practice, Iran’s government seems to be anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist in ideology as well. I’m not well-informed enough on their domestic policies to give any meaningful input on that front

A little more complicated I think. The state, at least rhetorically, is striving to achieve gender equality in the fields of education, healthcare, and childcare. They are seeking to eliminate poverty and will wield the power of the state to do so. They are against racial discrimination and have found themselves on the side of black Amerikans and female Amerikans historically, and they have unwaveringly supported Palestinian independence while other MENA nations have continued to balk and flip-flop.

There is little primary source evidence in Western media to indicate that they are as systematically homophobic as is claimed, executing gay men en masse or what have you. The individuals often mentioned as having been executed or imprisoned for homosexual relations were indeed executed or imprisoned for said relations… with children. The Iranian state has sponsored films regarding trans women who support the Islamic revolution.

There are issues. There are contradictions. The Hijab question is of course a big one - one in which women’s councils are being consulted, and one which will have to be resolved via Iranians and especially Iranian women. Their support for Palestine has also been contingent on the Islamic nature of the Palestine resistance (for instance, Khomeini did not like Yasser Arafat, the secular socialist Palestinian revolutionary) and they have a shady history with Iraq.

I am not a fan of theocracies or even theodemocracies for that matter, and they are not scientific socialists. However, I am not convinced that far-right is an apt description. I and I believe we all will have to learn more outside of the scope of the imperial infobubble.
