There’s actually a little exhibit about the history of the monument itself on the ground floor, just before the actual exhibit starts. Shows other proposed designs and IIRC has a brief on the actual construction
Ah, I thought it was a building, but it seems “only” the base can be entered and it’s considered an obelisk (still very impressive, though). Apparently it’s made of titanium

The base contains a sizeable museum though, with some excellent exhibits - Soviet moon landers, space suits, etc
